Netherlands

Public Sector

The Ministry of Economic Affairs has carried out a range of studies to compare the performance of the Dutch economy - as a whole or on a sectoral basis - with that of other countries. A number of these benchmarking studies are outlined below.

Benchmarking the Netherlands - benchmarking for growth

'Benchmarking the Netherlands', was published in the year 2002. The report places the performance of the Dutch economy in an international perspective. The performance and the basic conditions for economic activity (institutions, regulation, etc.) of the Dutch economy are compared with those of the economies of Germany, Denmark, Sweden, France, United Kingdom, United States, Japan and Australia in order to learn from the solutions found by other countries for common economic problems. This leads to a list of points which require attention with respect to improving the potential output of the Dutch economy. A similar report was published in 1997.

Production in the Netherlands

The report, "Production in the Netherlands", analyses the Dutch climate for production. It uses benchmarking to evaluate a sector's performance against best practice, and relates the results to the framework conditions in which the companies have to work. This study also identifies best practices in relations between the public and private sectors.

Telecommunications, infrastructure and services

The aim of this study, 'Benchmarking Study: Telecommunications Infrastructure and Services', is to compare the telecommunications sector in a number of countries. The goal is to analyse the Dutch situation and describe its strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and challenges. The study focuses on legislation and technology, taking into account international developments in the telecommunications industry.

Electronic services

The Dutch government is aiming to make the Netherlands the "information gateway" of Europe. This report, 'Benchmarking Study: Electronic Services: Towards an Information Society', determines the position of the Netherlands with respect to this sector. For a number of countries, policies relating to electronic services are considered in relation to the position of the Netherlands.

Electricity market

The market for electricity has been monopolised by the government for many years. Recently a number of private companies have entered the market. The Ministry of Economic Affairs has developed a set of indicators to explore to what extent the market for electricity can be said to have been liberalised. According to the report, this is one of the first studies trying to measure to what extent a particular sector has been liberalised.

Private Sector

National Contact Centre Benchmark Platform (NCCBP)

Contact centres (i.e. call centres) have been a growing sector of the Dutch economy for some years now. The NCCBP focuses on providing managers of contact centres with information about their performance in relation to others. Its aim is to provide the managers with a tool to improve the degree of professionalism in their organisation.

The platform collects its data through research reports about how these individual centres work. Every year a nation-wide research is carried out. These data are then interpreted and compared to international data.
